I agree that we often follow the automated system without thinking. And I have observed this far too often as we react to our emotions.

What do we do when we experience anger? Our automatic system has a canned response to such stress: fight (or flight). Unfortunately, we often follow that response without thinking. Verbal violence is a typical example of such a response.

We cannot control our emotions, but we can learn to control our reaction. And you have said it very well with the Covey’s quote – we have a choice.
