We hear and read a lot about building habits and routines. Consistency and routines make us better at doing things, and they help us reach our goals.

But I agree that this can get too far. Getting stuck in routines also robs us of our creative potential. According to Gregory Berns (“Iconoclast”), the odds of new ideas and insights decrease with less exposure to new environments and acquaintances.

So I guess one would seek a balance between consistency and regular exposure to new roles and experiences to realize one’s potential.
