I am glad that you highlight this from the perspective of sales. A successful salesperson knows no way around regular follow-ups.
I have seen too often that salespeople refuse to follow-up for two reasons:
First, our ego cannot deal with rejection. We get all emotional about it and blame others for our failed attempt. And secondly, we get afraid to bother the person once more. We accept a “no” as a no too soon.
I also agree that one can learn to “follow-up” well – it’s a skill with all attributes of art: creative, improvised, smart, valuable, and persistent without being blunt or annoying.
